NATURALLY, each of us would like others to see him as a good person. However, displaying such qualities is not easy in today's world. Most people are “not lovers of goodness.” (2 Tim. 3: 3) They may choose to follow their own standards of right and wrong, saying that “good is bad and bad is good.” (Isa. 5:20) It is also a challenge for us to show kindness because of our background and imperfection. Thus, we may feel as did Anne *, who although she has served God for many years, admits: “I find it very difficult to believe that I could ever be a better person.”
The good news is that we can all develop the qualities of goodness! Goodness is a part of the fruitage of God's holy spirit, and it is stronger than our imperfections, upbringing, or people and the world around us. Let us take a closer look at the quality of goodness and learn how we can display it to the full.
WHAT IS GOODNESS?
In short, goodness is the quality or state of being good. It involves moral excellence and moral excellence, free from any vices or vices. Kindness is displayed by taking an active interest in the welfare of others. A good person always looks for opportunities to help others and to do good things for them.
You may have noticed that some people tend to be kind to family and friends, but are they the only ones who need to be treated kindly? The fact is that none of us can be perfect in the absolute sense, for the Bible says that “there is not a righteous man on earth who always does good and never sins.” (Eccl. 7:20) The apostle Paul openly admitted: “I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, there dwells nothing good.” (Rom. 7:18) Therefore, it is vital that we learn how to cultivate this quality from God, the Source of goodness.
GOD IS GOOD
Almighty God sets the standard for what is good. The Bible says of him: “You are good and your works are good. Teach me your terms. ” (Ps. 119: 68) Let us consider two of the points mentioned in this verse regarding the goodness of Jesus.
God is good. The virtue of goodness can never be separated from the personality of God. Consider what happened when God told Moses: “I shall make all my goodness pass before you.” As the glory of God, including His goodness, passed by, Moses heard these words: “I, God, am a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in loving-kindness and truth, and I will by no means leave you nor by any means forsake you. evil and sin, but I will never punish the guilty. ” (Ex. 33:19; 34: 6, 7) Clearly, goodness is reflected in every aspect of God's personality. Although no human can compare with Jesus in displaying goodness, Jesus said: “Nobody is good, except one, God.” - Luke 18:19.
